Starkville’s basketball teams got back into hoops action this week and are back to their victorious ways, with both squads capturing blowout wins. Columbus’ boys team also authored a rout to continue its win streak.
Starkville
Starkville’s boys basketball team hopped back into action Tuesday and decimated Booneville 66-40, and just like that, the team is headed to Region 2-7A play undefeated.
The Jackets earned their 15th straight win this season at the Gerald Snider Classic at Northeast Community College over the Blue Devils (11-2), who were in the midst of a six-game win streak. Kobe Hendrix led the team with 12 points, three steals, two rebounds and two blocks, Jaden Tate scored 11 points with three steals and two rebounds, Ladanuel Jordan chipped in nine points, seven rebounds and TJ Warren provided eight points, five assists, four boards and two steals.The victory for the Jackets is their eighth straight by at least 10 points. Starkville will begin conference play on Jan. 6 at Clinton.
Coming off their only loss of the year so far, the Yellow Jackets’ girls team rebounded with back-to-back blowout wins on Monday and Tuesday at the New Albany Xmas Classic.
The Jackets took down Hancock 64-28 then held White Station under 20 points in a 58-18 triumph. The team (15-1) has two more nonconference games, one today against Whitehaven at 3 p.m. and takes on Hoover tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the Tangle on the Trail at Pontotoc.
Columbus
The Falcons’ boys basketball team notched its sixth win in a row on Tuesday with a 72-27 victory at Noxubee County. The win is the team’s (10-5) second over the Tigers (5-6) this season. Columbus takes on Spain Park tomorrow and Region 1-5A games begin on Jan. 6 against visiting Pontotoc. The Tigers host Kosciusko today and will battle Sumter Central tomorrow.
New Hope
The Trojans’ boys basketball team dropped a narrow 69-65 loss to Holmes County Central on Tuesday to extend their losing streak to five games. The loss for the team (1-10) closed out the nonconference slate to set up Region 1-5A play, which begins today at 7:30 p.m. against visiting Caledonia. The Trojans’ girls team let a slim 40-38 halftime lead turn into a 74-70 loss to the Jaguars. Holmes County Central outscored the Trojans 20-15 in the final quarter to pull away. New Hope (7-4) takes on Caledonia today at 6 p.m. to begin conference play.
