After 10 wild and winding weeks, Starkville controls its own destiny.
After a disheartening 1-2 start with losses to Brandon and West Point, the Yellow Jackets have found their groove as they ride a seven game win streak into Friday night’s contest against Warren Central.
Following a 52-0 throttling of Murrah on the road, the Yellow Jacket offensive contingent of junior quarterback Luke Altmyer, senior receiver Rufus Harvey and junior running back Amariyon Howard are clicking on all cylinders.
Altmyer lead the trio last week, finishing the game an impressive 17-of-22 for 151 yards and two touchdowns before handing things over to backup quarterback and classmate NyJal Johnson. As for Harvey and Howard — they combined for 39 yards on just 12 touches in limited action, but now sit at 1,358 yards and 15 touchdowns between them this year.
With a potent offense finding its footing, and a chance to wrap-up the MHSAA 6A Region 2 title, coach Chris Jones’ squad isn’t lacking for confidence heading into this week’s matchup in Vicksburg.
“I’ve always felt like this is a players game,” Jones said. “Our job (as coaches) is to prepare them for the game, but come Friday night it’s about who’s going to make plays and hopefully our guys are going to make a lot of plays and give us a chance to win.”
