Starkville and Caledonia both picked up at least two wins in the Cavalier Classic Tournament on Saturday while both New Hope and Heritage both earned at least one win to end the week.
Heritage Academy was the lone softball team to play at the end of last week where it picked up a loss to Winston Academy.
Volleyball
Starkville played three games in the Cavalier Classic on Saturday in Caledonia and won two matches against Northeast Lauderdale. Starkville opened play with a 2-0 win over Northeast by winning the first set 25-13 and the second set 27-26. Neshoba Central took the next game from Starkville 2-0, but the Yellow Jackets bounced back with a 2-1 win over Northeast once more. Starkville claimed the first set 25-12 but lost the second set 25-16. The Yellow Jackets rallied in the third set for a 15-13 victory.
Starkville (5-7) is back in action at 6 p.m. today at Germantown.
After falling 3-0 to Starkville on Thursday, New Hope went down to Biloxi to participate in the Biloxi Tournament.
The Trojans opened play with a 2-0 win over Forest County Agricultural but then dropped a contest 2-0 to Vancleave. New Hope (3-9) plays today at Neshoba Central at 6:30 p.m.
Caledonia took the momentum of a 3-1 win over South Pontotoc on Thursday into the Cavalier Classic, where it captured three wins.
The Cavaliers bested Heritage Academy 2-0 to open the tournament, winning sets 25-12 and 25-7, before taking down South Pontotoc in two sets, 25-16, 25-18. The Cavs tied 1-1 with Neshoba Central in its next match, then bested Pontotoc 2-0. New Albany ended Caledonia’s run, though, by handing the Cavs a 2-1 loss.
Caledonia (10-3-2) has an opportunity for revenge tonight when it hosts New Albany at 6:30 p.m.
Heritage Academy lost its Cavalier Classic opener to the host school, and 2-0 losses to Neshoba Central and South Pontotoc piled up before they broke through into the win column with a 2-0 sweep of Kosciusko. Choctaw County ended the Patriots’ tournament by handing the team a 2-0 loss. Heritage (5-15) plays today at Columbus at 6 p.m.
Starkville Academy went four sets with the Tupelo Titans but was dealt a 3-1 loss on Thursday in Tupelo.
The Titans took the first set 25-10 but the Volunteers rallied for a 25-21 win in the second set. Tupelo squeaked by in the third set for a 25-21 win and took the series in the fourth set with a close 25-22 victory.
SA (1-5) is back in action today at 6 p.m. at East Webster..
Heritage Academy 1, Winston Academy 13
The Patriots got behind 3-0 in the first inning and couldn’t recover in a 13-1 loss at Winston Academy on Thursday.
Winston added three more runs in the second inning and seven more in the third. Heritage got on the board with its only run in the third inning.
Kelsey Perkins, Lilla Berry and Kirksey Heard were the only Patriots to have a hit. Aubrey Gray pitched all three innings and gave up five hits and 13 runs (10 earned) with 10 walks and one strikeout.
Heritage (0-5) looks for its first win of the season today when it plays at East Rankin Academy at 6 p.m.
