Starkville’s varsity archery team had a great outing to begin the AIMS X-Treme High School Archery season with a second-place finish in the X-Treme Summer Shootout held this week at the Mississippi Horse Park.
In the indoor competition where each team takes turns shooting from 10 and 15 meters at targets depicting different animals, the Yellow Jackets rang up a team total of 846 points – which was just 14 points behind first-place finisher Center Hill’s 860. The final scores are created from each team’s top three scores, and for Starkville it got 290 points from Roman Seltzer-Hill, 288 points from Logan Tunnell and 268 points from Evan Hamby. Center Hill’s B team took third with a total of 842 points, and Starkville’s B team finished fourth with 817 points.
“We did well,” said head coach Bubba Forrester, who has been Starkville’s leader of archery for nine years. “Some days your good archers are not on and some days they are; that’s just typical with anybody I guess. A lot of them got there and started to over-try and then they started having problems. They were trying too hard. They just need to shoot like normal.”
The X-Treme season, which runs separate from the normal high school archery season in the early winter months, also uses some slightly different equipment. The bows have some added draw weight and participants are allowed to use different kinds of sights and a quick-release for better potential accuracy.
Up next for the team in the X-Treme season is the North qualifier in September, where the Jackets will compete for the right to make the championship shoot.
“Hopefully out of my two teams I’ll get one to qualify to shoot at state,” Forrester said.
Last season the Jackets had a team qualify at North State for the championship shoot and went on to place eighth in the finals.
“It wasn’t horrible, but it wasn’t great,” Forrester said. “The kids really enjoy it. It’s a whole lot different but we all like it.”
