STARKVILLE — Mississippi State women’s basketball is adding another game to its ledger.
A source with knowledge of the situation told The Dispatch Thursday that MSU’s game against No. 16 Tennessee, initially scheduled for Feb. 4, will be rescheduled for Feb. 16 at 4 p.m. MSU confirmed the news in a Thursday afternoon press release.
The initial meeting with Tennessee was canceled due to COVID-19-related issues within the Volunteers’ program.
MSU is currently in the midst of a three-game losing streak ahead of a meeting with No. 18 Arkansas on Thursday. The Bulldogs sit at 8-5 on the season and are 3-4 in conference play, marking the first time the program is below .500 in SEC play since the 2013-14 season.
MSU has already had three SEC games moved or cancelled this season due to COVID-19-related issues, including the cancellations of two games against Vanderbilt, which opted out of the season entirely in mid-January.
The Bulldogs are in their first year under head coach Nikki McCray-Penson. McCray-Penson arrived in Starkville after three years at Old Dominion following the departure of Vic Schaefer to Texas. McCray-Penson spent her playing days under legendary Tennessee head coach Pat Summitt in Knoxville during the mid-1990s before a 10-year professional career. She later served as an assistant at Western Kentucky and South Carolina before landing the Old Dominion job.
