Mississippi State is one of just two Southeastern Conference schools, along with Tennessee, with both a men’s and women’s player on the John R. Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 Watch List, as Tolu Smith and Jessika Carter were both recognized earlier this week.
Smith, despite being sidelined by a foot injury likely until mid-January, made the watch list on the men’s side. Smith played at Western Kentucky as a freshman, and in three years with the Bulldogs has averaged 14.2 points and eight rebounds per game.
Carter, in her sixth season with MSU, is coming off a season in which she led the SEC in field goal percentage, making 57 percent of her shots. She also led the Bulldogs with 14.8 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game. Carter has scored in double figures in each of her first three games this season, including double-doubles in two of the Bulldogs’ first four games. She has also recorded multiple blocks in each contest.
