OXFORD – No. 17 Ole Miss made the most of its final nonconference weekend series of 2025.
Senior left fielder Ryan Moerman hit two home runs and had seven RBIs Sunday against Jacksonville State – including an eighth-inning grand slam that put the run-rule into effect – as the Rebels finished off their sweep of the Gamecocks with a 13-2 win at Swayze Field. It’s the Rebels’ 13th straight win.
Moerman’s grand slam was the first for Ole Miss (14-1) since Calvin Harris hit one against Missouri on May 6, 2023, and his seven RBIs were the most since Harris drove in 10 that day.
In three games against the Gamecocks over the weekend, Ole Miss scored 32 runs on 30 hits. The Rebels also hit nine home runs and drew 19 walks.
The Rebels open SEC play with a three-game series against No. 3 Arkansas starting Friday.
“I think the lineup is in a great spot. Like I said, a lot of guys are swinging it well right now. I think a lot of guys had great weekends, and we just have a ton of depth,” Moerman, an Illinois transfer, said. “ … And I think our pitchers have been phenomenal all year. They’ve had our back in games we didn’t swing it as well, and I can’t wait to watch the bullpen go in these big games.”
Senior Mason Nichols pitched four scoreless innings with five strikeouts and two walks. He allowed one hit. Ole Miss pitchers allowed 10 earned runs, struck out 31 batters and walked 15 in the series against Jacksonville State.
“(Nichols was) terrific,” Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco said. “I thought he was lights out, and it might have been his best outing. Really, really good. … Five punchouts in four innings and at times pretty dominant.”
The Gamecocks (10-6) loaded the bases in the first inning, but Nichols was able to strike Drew Collins out to end the inning with no damage done. Senior right fielder Isaac Humphrey led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run.
The first three Rebels batters of the fourth reached base in front of junior first baseman Judd Utermark, who doubled up the middle to drive in two runs. A wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt from sophomore second baseman Brayden Randle scored the other two runs.
After freshman designated hitter Hayden Federico and senior left fielder Mitchell Sanford reached via a walk and single, respectively, Moerman hit his three-run home run to left on the second pitch of his at-bat in the fifth.
Jacksonville State scored two runs in the sixth off junior Will McCausland, and the Rebels scored five in the eighth, capped off by Moerman’s game-ending grand slam to right.
“The guys that were swinging hot bats seem to continue to do that, and then some other guys that probably haven’t gotten off to the start that they would want or what we thought would happen have swung it better, especially this weekend,” Bianco said. “I thought a lot of guys swung it well.”
Ole Miss plays at South Alabama Tuesday at 4 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
