Two Ole Miss pitchers were among the first 30 picks in the Major League Baseball draft on Saturday.
Right-hander Cade Townsend was selected 23rd overall by the Chicago Cubs, while teammate Taylor Rabe went to the Kansas City Royals at No. 30 in the competitive balance round A.
Townsend was 5-3 with a 3.94 ERA for the Rebels last season. He recorded 88 strikeouts against 22 walks in 64 innings. Townsend has a five-pitch repertoire, including a good mix of breaking balls.
Rabe, a 6-foot-6 righty, was 5-3 with a 3.55 ERA this year, with 105 strikeouts and just 15 walks in 76 innings. His big frame creates an intimidating presence to begin with, and his fastball hits the mid-to-upper 90s.
Other draftees
Ole Miss pitcher Hudson Calhoun, a Tupelo native, was taken 117th overall (fourth round) by the Texas Rangers. A reliever, Calhoun was 5-4 with a 4.05 ERA, 67 strikeouts and 26 walks in 46 2/3 innings.
Another Ole Miss pitcher, Will LIbbert, was selected in the fifth round (144th overall) by the Atlanta Braves. And his teammate, pitcher Landon Koenig, was taken in the eighth round (240th overall) by the New York Mets.
Ole Miss pitcher Landon Waters went to Toronto in the 17th round (522nd overall). Rebel catcher Austin Fawley was taken by Atlanta in the 19th round (562nd overall), and teammate J.P. Robertson, a pitcher, was taken in the 20th and final round by the San Francisco Giants (598th overall).
