WEST POINT — Oak Hill Academy announced on Monday the addition of two new coaches to its football staff for the 2023 season.
Former Aberdeen head coach Chris Duncan and former West Point coach Tom Goode Jr. will be part of the Raiders staff next season, something that head coach Bill Rosenthal was excited to talk about.
“Coach Duncan has been in the area coaching for 26 years,” Rosenthal said. “He was very successful at Aberdeen. … Tom and I played in the high school all-star game in 1983, so he’s moved back to the area. They’ll both make great additions to the Oak Hill family.”
Duncan brings with him success at his previous coaching stops, including two north half championships at Aberdeen in 2009 and 2010.
He was twice named the Commercial Appeal Coach of the Year and was a one-time winner of the Daily Journal Football Coach of the Year.
Goode is a local product, having played at Mississippi State and his previous coaching experience down the street at West Point. Along with coaching the Green Wave, Goode also coached at Texas Southern.
“We’re anxious to get them here and decide who’s going to do what, who’s going to coach what position,” Rosenthal said. “It’s a unique situation. All of us were offensive linemen, but we’ve all coached everything.”
His father, Tom Goode Sr., is enshrined in the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, a former NFL player who coached at East Mississippi Community College from 1991-2003 and was an offensive line coach for the Bulldogs from 1972-75 and 1984-89.
Oak Hill struggled last season, going 3-7 while scoring 21.6 points a game. The Raiders were out-scored by an average of 10.3 points a game last season, a point of emphasis in the offseason.
These two hires will hope to mitigate those issues this fall.
“I feel like there’s enough football intelligence that we’ll be in good hands with those two additions,” Rosenthal said.
