PINEHURST, N.C. — West Point native Wells Williams took part in the first two rounds of the 124th U.S. Open Championships in North Carolina this week, posting a +11 score before missing the Saturday cut.
Williams, who golfs collegiately at Vanderbilt, posted back-to-back 4-under 67 rounds at Woodmont in Maryland to qualify for the U.S. Open. He finished the qualifying round at 8-under 134, going bogey-free in Round Two to punch his ticket to Pinehurst Resort.
Williams was one of two Commodores to earn a trip to Pinehurst this year, joining senior All-American Gordon Sargent. Sargent earned the top spot in the 2023 World Amateur Golf Rankings and took home the Mark H. McCormack Medal.
Williams recovered after a shaky start to Round One in Pinehurst to finish the first day at 4-over par. In Round Two he again recovered nicely on the back-nine but failed to make the cut at T-146th in the standings. Still, it was a strong showing to make it to a difficult course by the 20-year old.
The Oak Hill Academy graduate committed to Vanderbilt as the No. 1-ranked golfer in Mississippi, earning multiple junior All-American honors during his time with the Raiders. By his senior season, he was the No. 6-ranked golfer in the Class of 2022.
As a freshman, Williams made the SEC All-Freshman Team and garnered Golfweek Honorable Mention All-American and a GCAA Division I PING All-Region awards.
Williams just completed his sophomore season with Vanderbilt men’s golf, during which he helped the Commodores team win the 2023 St Andrews Links Collegiate and the 2024 Watersound Invitational tournaments.
