Caledonia senior Sunny Logan put an emphatic stamp on her high school tennis career, dropping two games in four matches to claim her fourth MHSAA Class 4A title on Thursday in Oxford.
Logan, who won two matches without dropping a game on Wednesday, won her semifinal and final matches on Thursday by identical 6-0, 6-1 scores. She first defeated Niyah Strickland of Quitman, the fourth seed, and then polished off the second seed, Heidi Clayton of New Albany.
The Cavaliers’ boys doubles team of Jorden Neyman and Caleb Loftis dropped the opening match, losing 6-2, 6-3 to fourth-seeded William Dedeaux and Tucker Smith of Stone County. Ava Moore and Austin Hays faced a similar fate in girls doubles, falling to Elizabeth Shirley and Katherine Bounds of West Lauderdale 6-3, 6-3.
In Class 5A, second-seeded Hannah East of New Hope roared into the girls singles semifinals, dropping four games in two straight-set victories.
East made quick work of Alexa Wells of Florence, 6-1, 6-0, before defeating Vancleave’s Maison Evans 6-0, 6-3.
The wins set up a semifinal showdown with third-seeded Alexandra Lampton of Lafayette. That match will be at 9 a.m. Friday, with the final slated for 1 p.m. Top-seeded Micah Hill of Laurel and fourth-seeded Ainsley Robison of Saltillo will meet in the other semifinal.
Starkville’s Dean Lockhart went 1-1 in the Class 6A boys singles on Thursday, rolling past James Pacelli of Northwest Rankin 6-0 6-0 in his first-round match before falling 6-3, 6-2 to third-seeded Sam Tull of Ocean Springs in the second round.
In the Class 5A boys singles tournament, Jeremyah McDaniel of Columbus faced second-seeded Sylvester Cannon in the opening round and fell 6-3, 6-3.
