Madison Johnson and Lauren Rutherford scored 2 goals apiece Thursday night as the MSMS girls soccer team opened the season with a 7-0 win at Columbus.
Elena Eaton recorded a goal and an assist for MSMS, while Claire Ellison and Quinn Boerner each scored a goal. Johnson added an assist.
Goalkeeper Blaire Diffrient had 5 saves to keep the clean sheet for the Blue Waves.
“It was a strong start to our season,” MSMS coach Chuck Yarborough said. “Each year we start from scratch with half of the team — the seniors — not having played with the other half of the team — the new juniors. We have to spend a lot of time building communication and teamwork. This group has built a camaraderie and spirit that is already evident on the pitch.
“We learned a lot tonight, and we certainly have some things to work on. But to perform so well on opening night against an athletic and well-coached Columbus side bodes well for the season ahead.”
Boys soccer
MSMS 10, Columbus 4: Nicholas Djedjos scored 4 goals to lead the Blue Waves, while Tsetsenkhaan Tsogt-Erdene, Carter Miller and Aaron Sharp each added 2 goals.
Goalkeepers James Talamo, Chase Bryant, and Gordon Welch each had a save.
“We played Columbus with a very open formation and got a solid collective performance tonight,” coach Armando Leyva said. “The team played our first match together with good coordination and made good progress in setting a playing style.”
Next up for MSMS is a Nov. 11 game against Philadelphia at the Lowndes County Soccer Complex.
