LEXINGTON — For the ninth-straight season, West Point football will be playing in a playoff semifinal after the Green Wave defeated Holmes County Central, 34-21, in the quarterfinals of the Mississippi High School Activities Class 5A playoffs on Friday night.
After being tied 14-14 with the Jaguars at halftime, the Green Wave (9-3) outscored Holmes County Central, 20-7, in the second half to pull away.
Senior Kahnen Daniels ran for two touchdowns in the win, reaching the 20-touchdown mark for the second-straight season.
Fellow senior Quinterion Tillman-Evans had a three-touchdown night, including two in the second half to help seal the game.
The Green Wave will take on a familiar face in the 5A semifinals in Clarksdale, the District 1 champion and the same team that ended West Point’s 18-game district winning streak on Oct. 12 with a 27-21 win.
West Point travels to play the Wildcats at 7 p.m. Friday.
Starkville 20, Oxford 0 (MHSAA Class 7A quarterfinals)
OXFORD — In a rematch of the “Little Egg Bowl” from earlier this season, Starkville shut out Oxford, 20-0, in the quarterfinals of the MHSAA Class 7A playoffs on Friday night.
For the sixth time in the last nine years, the Yellow Jackets (9-3) are headed to the semifinals, including each of the last three seasons.
So far this postseason, Starkville has outscored its opponents, 64-0, pitching two-straight shutouts in the process.
It’s the first time since the 2021 season that Starkville’s defense has posted two shutouts in the same season, which is also the last time they hosted a semifinal.
That season’s semifinal opponent is the same as this season following Madison Central’s 14-12 upset over Tupelo on the road on Friday.
In 2021, the Jaguars defeated the Jackets, 34-13, but this time around, Starkville is looking for payback and a second trip to Oxford in three weeks to play for a state title.
