Amaya Sampson belted a three-run home run during the second inning to start the New Hope High School softball team on its way to an 11-4 rout of Amory on Tuesday night in New Hope.
Sampson finished 3 for 3, while Kensley Woolbright also went 3 for 3 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs for the Trojans (14-12-1).
Adi Dueitt went the distance to earn the win, striking out eight while allowing five hits and one walk. She also hit a two-run triple during a five-run fourth inning that gave the Trojans an 8-3 lead.
Meridian 14, Starkville 3: Olivia Mattison struck out five, but the Wildcats scored seven runs in the first inning and cruised past the Yellow Jackets in Starkville.
Baseball
Starkville 8, East Webster 6: Nine walks, seven errors, three wild pitches and a hit batter helped the Yellow Jackets post a win over the Wolverines in Maben.
Chipper Hornburger, Brennon Wright and Ethan Pulliam each scored two runs for Starkville (9-14). Karsten Upchurch pitched the first three innings, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out three to earn the win. Three relievers gave up two unearned runs apiece.
