Senior Josh Pitts tossed a two-hitter, allowing one unearned run with nine strikeouts and two walks, to lead the Caledonia High School baseball team to a 4-1 win over Tishomingo County on Monday in Iuka.
The win avenged an 11-3 loss to the Braves on Friday in Caledonia.
The Cavaliers (3-7) scored all the runs they would need in the top of the first. Nick Wade, Brandon Glenn and Pitts each walked with one out. With two outs, Andrew Huckaby walked to force in a run, and Cooper Bates drove in two runs with a single to right.
Caledonia picked up its fourth run during the third inning. Parker. Harris reached on an error, went to second on a sacrifice by Huckaby, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.
The Braves scored their run in the bottom of the sixth when Dylan Kirk walked, moved to second on an error and scored on a single to center by Spence Couffman. Pitts rebounded from the unearned run by pitching a 1-2-3 seventh to wrap up the win.
Brandon 9, Starkville 0: Chipper Hornburger singled with one out in the top of the first, and the Yellow Jackets did not manage another hit against two Brandon pitchers.
None of the seven runs charged to Starkville starter Karsten Upchurch was earned as the Yellow Jackets committed four errors. Upchurch pitched into the fifth inning, allowing four hits.
Amory 6, Starkville 0: Xavier Caldwell singled twice to account for two of the Yellow Jackets’ three hits.
Softball
Hancock 11, New Hope 0: The Hawks pounded out 14 hits in their rout of the Trojans.
Lailah Henderson, Zoe Goodman and Taylor Brownlee each singled for New Hope (6-8). Hancock’s Teegan DeWitt struck out 13 without issuing a walk.
Pearl River Central 5, New Hope 3: The Trojans took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Izzy Martin belted a one-out grand slam to lift the Blue Devils.
Trojans pitcher Adi Dueitt had allowed just four hits before the seventh inning, but a walk, a double and an error set the table for Martin’s blast.
Lexi McBrayer singled home a run and scored on a Lailah Henderson triple during the fifth inning for the Trojans.
Quitman 7, New Hope 6: The Trojans surrendered two runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Lailah Henderson reached on an error in the bottom of the seventh, stole second and third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kensley Woolbright, but the Trojans could not score the tying run.
Henderson went 2 for 4 and scored three runs for the Trojans, while Woolbright singled, walked twice and drove in three runs.
