Sophomore running back Martavius Wicks rushed for 160 yards and senior quarterback Vernorrius Chaney threw for 111 yards and 2 touchdowns Friday night to pace the Noxubee County High School football team to a 20-8 win over Shannon.
Chaney completed 11 of 23 passes for the Tigers, finding Anthony Little for both scoring passes. Trey Sledge carried five times for 65 yards and a touchdown and converted a 2-point run.
Chaunssey Triplett recorded 4 sacks and 8 tackles-for-loss for Noxubee County (2-2) while recording 7 solo tackles and 4 assists. Dealbryeon Owens made 4 solo tackles and broke up two passes, and Ramoan Jackson had 2 TFLs and 7 assisted tackles.
Shunterrion Sherrod and Deareake Gray each intercepted a pass for the Tigers, who kept Shannon winless at 0-4.
West Lowndes 58, Noxapater 0: Seniors Marquez Shelton and Fredrick Rice each rushed for two touchdowns as visiting West Lowndes cruised in the Class 1A-3 opener for both teams.
Junior Jaquavious Tate led the Panthers with 144 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Rice completed 3 of 8 passes for 55 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown pass to senior Decamby Willis. Rice rushed for 58 yards, Tyler Williams finished with 47 and Shelton 45 as West Lowndes racked up 320 rushing yards and outgained Noxapater 375-129 in total offense.
West Lowndes (2-2) returns hom Friday to face Sebastopol.
Tupelo 38, Columbus 14: The undefeated Golden Wave scored on a fumble return, an interception return and a kickoff return to pull away from the Falcons in Tupelo.
Columbus (1-3) held the Tupelo ground game to just 65 yards on 24 carries and trailed just 21-14 at the half.
New Hope 24, Itawamba Agricultural 0: In a battle of unbeaten teams, the Trojans pulled away for their second consecutive shutout victory.
New Hope will open Class 5A-1 play at home Friday against Columbus.
Oak Hill 34, Lee Academy 18: The Raiders rebounded from a loss to Canton Academy with a road victory over the winless Colts in their opening MAIS Class 4A-1 game..
Oak Hill (2-3) will play district opponents the next two weeks, hosting Kirk Academy on Friday and visiting North Delta on Oct. 1.
Aliceville 37, Cold Springs 0: TyJarian Williams completed just five passes, but they were good for 221 yards and 2 touchdowns in Friday night’s rout.
Williams also completed three 2-point conversion passes as Aliceville took a 24-0 lead at halftime.
Jermaine Brewer, Shawnderrick Kirkland and Jeremiah Brewer each rushed for a touchdown, with Jermaine Brewer leading Aliceville with 91 yards rushing. Jordan Sterling led the team with 111 receiving yards on 3 receptions, while TyQuan Simon caught a 79-yard TD pass and Landon Ball snagged a 31-yard scoring reception.
TyJhawn Hill made 9.5 tackles, including 4 solo, to lead Aliceville, while Cornelius Burns assisted on 12 tackles, making 2 tackles-for-loss.
Cold Springs managed just 118 yards of total offense to Aliceville’s 404 despite running twice as many plays.
Pickens Academy 35, Abbeville Christian 14: Deveren Wilkins scored on runs of 80, 30 and 54 yards and finished with 209 yards rushing to lead the visiting Pirates.
Landon Burgess returned an interception 24 yards for a Pickens score, while Cole Gibson intercepted three Abbeville Christian passes. Caleb Owen led the Pirates in tackles with seven, while Chandler Box and Clay More each made five.
Tabernacle Christian (Ala.) 68, Victory Christian 22: In Gardendale, Alabama, Tyshon Rogers rushed for 85 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Eagles took a 16-14 lead, but the Torches put on an offensive show from there.
Rogers went out with an injury late in the first half, and Cameron Henry took over at quarterback and rushed for 111 yards and threw a 4-yard TD pass to Jeremiah Smith for VCA’s final touchdown.
The Eagles will return home Friday to take on New Life Christian of Millbrook, Alabama.
Tunica Academy 72, Columbus Christian 46: Beau Kemp rushed for 133 yards and 3 touchdowns, and Jonah Harrison scored twice for the Rams, who led 8-6 after the first quarter in Tunica.
Kemp scored on runs of 34 and 45 yards during the third quarter as CCA tried to keep it close, but the Blue Devils scored four times during the period, which included a one-hour weather delay, to build a 56-30 lead. The Rams’ passing game struggled all night, as two quarterbacks combined to complete just 3 of 13 passes with an interception.
Lahndon Townley recorded 3 sacks and led the Rams with 8 tackles, while Harrison made 4 tackles and Luke Cook, McCory Humphries and Kemp each had 3.
Columbus Christian will next face DeSoto of Arkansas on Friday night in Steens.
