STEENS — The Potts Camp High School football team made Immanuel Christian’s Homecoming game one to forget Friday night with a 35-0 victory.
Potts Camp (5-3), a Class 2A Mississippi High School Activities Association member, stymied Immanuel Christian (1-6), holding the Rams to 109 yards.
The Rams committed three turnovers and crossed midfield twice.
“We just did not play consistent from the first play to the end of the game,” Immanuel Christian coach Greg Watkins said. “This is probably one of the worst games we’ve played. It was Homecoming, and Homecoming is a coach’s worst nightmare.”
Quarterback Darius Jones led the Rams with 52 passing yards, and running back Jason Davis added 56 all-purpose yards.
Potts Camp coach Shane Stone was proud of his defense, which recorded a shutout for the second straight game.
“The last two week we shored up our defense and made personnel changes,” Stone said. “On offense, we executed in the running game and the passing game.”
Quarterback Ben Bolden led Potts Camp with two touchdown passes and a touchdown run. Running back Jordon Harris (117 rushing yards) ran for a touchdown and had a touchdown reception.
Watkins shouldered the blame for the Rams’ poor performance.
“It’s the coach’s responsibility to prepare his team during the week and we weren’t prepared,” Watkins said. “I’ll take the responsibility. It’s my responsibility to make sure the team is mentally ready, and we weren’t mentally ready.”
Potts Camp built an 8-0 lead in the first quarter behind an 8-yard touchdown run by Bolden. After trading possessions, Potts Camp drove down the field at the end of the second quarter and scored on a 16-yard screen pass from Bolden to Harris with seven seconds before halftime to take a 16-0 lead.
Potts Camp scored twice in the third quarter and once more in the fourth quarter, wearing down Immanuel Christian’s defense and taking advantage of turnovers and good field position.
Potts Camp began half of its offensive possessions in Immanuel Christian territory.
The Rams forced two turnovers. Defensive back K.C. Cunningham intercepted a pass in the second quarter, and defensive lineman Jeremy Davidson recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter.
