JACKSON — A remarkable season took another turn for the Mississippi University for Women baseball team on Tuesday. The W took a break from a crowded St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule, traveling to the state capital to take on Southern Athletic Association regular season champions Millsaps College, winning a 13-8 shootout.
The Owls, 18-14, now have 12 wins in 16 games throughout April, a historic stretch for the Owls as they close in on the top seeds in the SLIAC standings.
Zach Johnson kept up his hot hitting for the Owls with a game-high four hits and tied with Avery Benson for a game-high four RBI. Johnson also went yard twice, improving his tally to seven home runs on the season.
Both the Owls and Majors relied on their respective bullpens in the midweek matchup, with six pitchers taking the mound for The W. Jackson Gantt was credited with the win, his first of the year, after two shutout innings out of the bullpen. Starter Robby Canten went 2.2 innings before he was pulled.
The W will have a Senior Day for the Owls on Saturday in the regular season finale doubleheader against Westminster College. The Owls will then head to Missouri for the SLIAC championships, beginning Tuesday.
