MACON, Ga. — Mississippi University for Women women’s soccer shut out Wesleyan College, 5-0, on Monday for its first NCAA Division III victory.
Sophomore Kate Blankenship was the story of the day for the Owls (1-0), netting a hat trick in her first regular season match at MUW.
”It is so exciting that we got our first D3 win in our first-ever official D3 game,” Blakenship said. “We made history today, and plan to continue to do so for the rest of the season. We have had many speed bumps to overcome early on in the season. I am so proud of how the team has come together as a family.”
She was one of three players to get on the scoresheet on Monday, including freshman Kiersten Taylor and senior Lindsey Moyle. Taylor also scored in her first regular-season collegiate match, opening up the scoring in the 21st minute.
Overall, the Owls out-shot the Wolves 30-1 in the match, converting on 16.7 percent of their total shot attempts.
That level of domination was especially evident in the second half, where the Owls scored four goals, including all three from Blankenship.
“My hat trick is not just a result of my actions and abilities,” Blankenship said. “It was our team working in unison to achieve our common goal. It would’ve been impossible without them. It felt incredible, and I can’t wait to see what all else we accomplish throughout this season.”
Owls goalkeeper Olivia Clark also pitched her fourth shutout with MUW, making one save on Wesleyan’s lone shot in the match.
The Owls head to Montgomery, Ala., for their next match Sunday against Huntingdon College.
