COLUMBUS — While the weekend ended on a sour note in the final game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Mississippi University for Women baseball took care of business against Wright State Lake, winning two of three over the Lakers.
The weekend began with a come-from-behind 4-3 win in 11 innings, in which the Owls were down 3-0 after the third but came back to tie the game with two outs in the ninth. The Owls (5-2) persevered in the 11th as Avery Benson singled home the game-winning run.
Saturday’s doubleheader opener followed much in the same suit, with The W facing a three-run deficit in the middle innings of the game.
Up 3-2 in the second, a four-run response from the Lakers put the Owls in a 6-3 hole, but from there, they scored six unanswered runs to run away with things, winning 10-6. MUW secured the series win and extended its season-high winning streak to four games.
Saturday’s doubleheader finale saw the worst pitching performance of the weekend coupled with three MUW errors. All four Owls pitchers allowed multiple runs, though just seven of Wright State Lake’s 13 runs in the 13-9 win were earned, it was a letdown performance overall.
Benson was the offensive star of the weekend, recording three-straight multi-hit games as he went 7-for-13 (.538) at the plate with a home run, two doubles, four runs scored and six RBIs.
Austin Telano and Baron Brack also had hits in all three games, hitting .384 (5-for-13) each.
On the mound, Robby Canten and Connor Reilly had stellar outings. Canten started Friday’s series opener, throwing five innings, allowing three runs, all unearned, and struck out seven Lakers.
Reilly came in relief of him on Friday, throwing 3.1 innings of shutout ball, striking out four in the process. He has yet to allow an earned run through his first three outings of the season, throwing seven total innings so far.
