ELSAH, Ill. — Mississippi University for Women track and field had a banner showing on Saturday at the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships at Principia College.

Facing a tough conference lineup, the Owls’ women’s team finished second and men’s team finished fifth overall, with the men just a point away from a fourth-place finish.
Both teams exceeded preseason poll expectations, with the women earning a podium finish at the end of the indoor season.
“I’m very proud of these athletes that came out this weekend to perform,” head coach Dedrick Burnett said.
A dozen school records were broken on Saturday along with eight podium finishes, but the highlight of the day was freshman Ty’Kerria Young, MUW’s first-ever individual SLIAC champion, who placed first in the women’s 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.72 seconds.
She set two school records on the day in both long jump, 4.88 meters, and triple jump, 10.55 meters, earning a second-place finish in triple jump.
On the men’s side, Sinaj Lynn highlighted the day’s performances, as he was named SLIAC Newcomer of the Year and Field Events Athlete of the Year.
He placed second in both long jump, 6.56 meters, and triple jump, 12.18 meters, recording a school record in long jump.
“From the results we had in this meet, I’m happy to prove the conference wrong and raise the alert that our program is coming in to make a statement in the conference,” Burnett said.
