The Mississippi University for Women saw its baseball and softball teams hit the road this week for neutral site action. The Owls baseball team took a trip to the state capital while the softball team traveled to the East Coast for a spring break slate of games in South Carolina.
Baseball
The Owls, 3-9, traveled to Pearl for a matchup with Belhaven, losing 5-4 after a fierce comeback from the Blazers.
It was a strong start to the game with three runs in the first three innings. Zach Johnson drove in the first two runs with an RBI single in the first inning and a fielder’s choice in the third. Caledonia native Loren Cox added to the lead with an RBI single in the third and a sacrifice RBI in the fifth. The Owls led 4-1 after five innings, with starting pitcher Campbell McCluney holding his own. He was relieved in the sixth as the Blazers began their comeback, and Robby Canten had a difficult outing out of the bullpen.
The Blazers scored four runs over the next three innings, taking the lead in the eighth and closing out the Owls in the ninth.
The Owls are on the road to begin conference play next week, traveling to face Fontbonne University in St. Louis.
Softball
The Owls softball team began the first leg of its spring break trip to Myrtle Beach on the sideline with its Monday double slate of games canceled due to weather. They were able to go ahead on Tuesday, splitting games against King’s College and Penn State Abington.
The Owls lost 2-1 to King’s College, conceding the decisive run in the final inning after six innings of deadlock.
Avery Byerley threw a complete game from the circle, allowing six hits while striking out two over six innings. Riley Phillips got the only run of the day for the Owls with a sac-bunt in the third inning to tie the game.
The Owls were able to shake the loss quickly for their next matchup against the Nittany Lions. Brooklyn Rhodes went 3-3 at the plate to score three of the team’s four runs in a 4-0 victory. Ashton Farnell added the other run on an RBI single.
Phallyn Clark pitched all seven innings of the shutout win, allowing just four hits and walking one while striking out three.
The Owls, now 9-5, continue their stay in South Carolina with two games today, starting at noon, and two on Friday.
