OXFORD — Ole Miss hit four home runs against UT Martin Tuesday night – including two from senior left fielder Mitchell Sanford – as the Rebels finished up their non-conference regular-season slate with an 11-5 win over the Skyhawks at Swayze Field.
Sanford, freshman designated hitter Ethan Surowiec and junior first baseman Will Furniss each hit long balls for the Rebels (35-17, 14-13 SEC). It was Sanford’s third game this season with multiple home runs.
“Just proud of (Surowiec). He’s earned this, and we’ve tried to figure out how to get him some at-bats, and it’s tough,” Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco said. “In the live BPs in practice, of the guys who don’t play much, he’s really separated himself and has done really well.”
Freshman Cade Townsend started for Ole Miss and surrendered two earned runs over four innings of work. He struck out three batters and walked two.
Sanford led the game off with a solo home run, taking the second pitch of the bottom half of the first deep to right-center. Surowiec – making his first-career start – and Sanford each went yard in the second as part of the Rebels’ five-run inning, and Furniss hit a ball deep to right to lead off the third.
The Skyhawks (20-31, 11-12 OVC) got on the board in the fourth with a two-run home run from Arderrius Townsend and scored two more runs off sophomore Patrick Galle in the sixth. Ole Miss scored one run in the sixth and three more in the eighth.
Ole Miss begins its final regular-season series Thursday at Swayze Field against No. 6 Auburn at 6:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
