OXFORD — The University of Mississippi men’s basketball team will open the 2011-12 season at 6:30 tonight when it plays host to the University of Louisiana-Monroe at Tad Smith Coliseum.
Ole Miss returns six lettermen and three starters from last season when it went 20-14 and lost in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament.
In his sixth season at the school, coach Andy Kennedy has a record of 105-64. His year’s team that went 20-14 and played in the NIT. His 105 wins are the most by an Ole Miss coach in a five-year period. He is the first Rebel coach to lead the program to four 20-win seasons and the second to guide Ole Miss to four postseason appearances.
Ole Miss will look to junior forward Reginald Buckner, who Wednesday was named to the preseason All-Southeastern Conference second team by the league coaches.
Senior forward Terrance Henry (9.7 points per game) is the team’s leading returning scorer. The Rebels also will welcome back junior forward Murphy Holloway, who was cleared to play immediately after he transferred back to Ole Miss from the University of South Carolina.
Ole Miss beat the University of North Alabama 91-62 in its lone preseason exhibition game.
The Rebels also will look to returning players Nick Williams, a junior guard, Demarco Cox, a sophomore center, Dundrecous Nelson, a sophomore guard, and Steadman Short, a senior forward.
Ole Miss will welcome University of Memphis transfer Jelan Kendrick into the program, as well as freshmen Maurice Aniefiok, Aaron Jones, Jamal Jones, Jarvis Summers, and Ladarius White.
