No. 3 South Carolina held No. 17 Ole Miss to just 26.5% shooting from the field Sunday afternoon, and the Gamecocks defeated the Rebels 85-48 in Columbia, South Carolina. It was the Rebels’ (21-8, 8-6 SEC) fourth game in a week and puts Ole Miss on its first losing streak of the season.
South Carolina (27-2, 13-1) star Joyce Edwards scored a game-high 21 points and Madina Okot chipped in 17 points and 10 rebounds. Senior forward Christeen Iwuala scored 12 points and was the only Ole Miss player to finish in double-figure scoring. Star senior forward Cotie McMahon finished with two points on 0 for 9 shooting.
Ole Miss forced six Gamecock turnovers in the first quarter, though 10 points from Edwards helped put South Carolina ahead by four heading into the second. The Gamecocks went on a 12-1 run during the second quarter – and held Ole Miss without a field goal for more than seven minutes – and upped their lead to as many as 18. The Rebels missed 11 of 14 shots in the period and trailed 41-25 at halftime.
South Carolina opened up the third quarter by hitting 4 of 6 from the field and outscored Ole Miss 25-9 in the period. The Rebels were 8 of 40 from the field in the second half and hit 3 of 17 from 3-point range overall. South Carolina shot just under 50% from the field in the game.
Ole Miss plays at Florida on Thursday at 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network.
