Alongside Starkville’s climactic finish to its season-opening 57-54 win over Oak Grove on Friday, the team wowed in the box score as it produced astonishing numbers in its first game under new head coach John Carr, who promised to bring an explosive offense to Yellow Jacket Stadium.
Here are some numbers to know:
1,273: The number of yards of total offense produced during Friday’s contest. Oak Grove brought 565 yards to the table, 446 of which came from the arm of Warrior quarterback Kellen Hall.
708: The number of yards of offense generated by the Yellow Jackets, a new school record. The previous record was 643 yards, set against Clinton during the 2014 season.
486: The number of passing yards by quarterback Kingston Johnson set the new school mark in his first-ever appearance under center for Starkville. The previous record was held by Luke Altmyer, who threw for 426 yards against Germantown in the 2020 season.
111: Total points scored in the game; the most in school history.
70: Yardage for the longest passing play made by either team – a throw by Johnson to receiver A’braylen Jenkins.
57: The yards picked up by Johnson on a scramble for the longest rushing attempt of the game. Yellow Jacket running back Torien Knox came in second with a 34-yard run.
21.1: The average number of yards per completion for Johnson. He went 23-of-37 through the air.
8: The number of different pass-catchers targeted by Johnson in Friday’s game. Jenkins led receivers with 134 yards on six catches with one touchdown.
5: The number of combined punts in the entire contest. Starkville punted twice and Oak Grove punted three times.
3: The number of blocked PATs by Starkville defensive lineman Ladanuel Jordan, each helping sustain a difference in the scoring column as both teams traded blows. Head coach John Carr said it’s his favorite statistic from the game.
“He basically scored a field goal by himself,” Carr said. “He’s a dual sport guy who plays basketball. He’s got great anticipation.”
1: The number of field goals by Starkville kicker Jacori Gallegos, who drilled it from 26 yards out to provide the Yellow Jackets their first points of the 2025 season. It was the only one attempted throughout the contest.
57-54: The final score and Carr’s second-favorite statistic of the game.
“As a coach, you want to do whatever you have to do to win a ball game,” Carr said. … “Football is the ultimate team game and you have to have everybody – you have to have the kicking game.”
