STARKVILLE — The No. 8 Mississippi State baseball team’s fate as the No. 5 seed in the Southeastern Conference tournament was settled before it took the field Saturday against No. 5 LSU after a three-hour rain delay.
Unfortunately, LSU sent MSU to Hoover, Alabama, with its first SEC sweep since the beginning of league play after an 11-7 victory at Dudy Noble Field.
LSU completed the sweep by touching MSU (34-22, 17-13 SEC) for double-digit runs in consecutive games for the first time this year. The final two games of the series saw the Bulldogs allow 22 runs, 22 hits, and 21 walks.
MSU will play No. 12 seed Georgia at approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday in the first round of the SEC tournament. If MSU beats Georgia, it will play No. 4 seed Arkansas, the other team to sweep MSU in conference play, in the second round. The loser of the MSU-georgia game will be eliminated from the tournament.
The loss could have been the final game at Dudy Noble Field before it undergoes its two-year renovation. MSU entered the weekend with hopes of bolstering its hopes of playing host to a four-team regional in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
MSU spent the weekend celebrating the stadium’s history, welcoming back former players, and celebrating fans.
