Mississippi State men’s tennis continued its positive start to the season with a Top-10 matchup win over the weekend. The No. 5-ranked Bulldogs (13-2, 4-1 SEC) picked up a home win over No. 8 Georgia by a team score of 4-2 in Starkville on Sunday, the team’s second win over a Top-10 opponent this season.
MSU suffered February defeats to No. 1 Virginia at the ITA National Indoor Championships and No. 3 Texas in SEC play, but built on each humbling with wins over No. 4 Stanford and No. 18 Auburn to stay near the top of the team rankings. The victory over Georgia last weekend gives the team momentum heading into a stretch of four straight away matches.
MSU started off the day from behind after Georgia claimed the doubles point. The No. 5 pairing of Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez took care of their match on Court 1, but the other two doubles matches went to the other Bulldogs.
The singles matches were a bit more straightforward, with Jovanovic, Sanchez Martinez, Mario Martinez Serrano, Niccolo Baroni and Raphael Vaksmann all picking up wins to mark a 4-2 victory.
For Jovanovic, the win marked four straight singles-match victories.
MSU is back in action this weekend at No. 13 South Carolina, beginning Friday at 4 p.m.
