OXFORD — Reaching the Final Four of the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A playoffs has become a norm for New Hope volleyball in recent years.
Once again, the Trojans found themselves one win away from competing for a state championship this year, traveling to take on Lafayette in the North State title game.
Unfortunately, the Cinderella run for New Hope ended in the semis as the Commodores advanced to play for a state title, defeating the Trojans in straight sets, 16-25, 20-25, 17-25.
“I’m very proud of this team and all of the accomplishments they’ve made this season,” head coach Allison Woolbright said. “Our schedule was tough all season but they worked hard everyday at practice to prepare. I’m especially proud to have finished our season as one of only four teams (left) in 5A volleyball.”
Unlike the last time these two teams faced in the playoffs, a four-set win for the Trojans (23-19), Lafayette had the upper hand, extending their winning streak to three against New Hope.
The Commodores went 3-0 against New Hope this season, winning every set in the process, and are now riding an eight-game winning streak heading into Thursday’s state title game.
It was a rough end to a successful season, but despite struggles along the way, the Trojans still proved themselves as a top team in 5A.
“Final Four is a great accomplishment,” Woolbright said. “We will miss our seniors and their leadership but we have a lot of good players to move forward with next season and rebuild. It’s always a great day to be a Trojan.”
