COLUMBUS — What once looked to be a surefire path to get into the playoffs has gotten incredibly tight down the stretch for Mississippi University for Women women’s basketball.
The Owls currently sit at 6-11 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) standings with one game left to play on Saturday afternoon.
With the top-six teams in the conference making the upcoming conference tournament, MUW, despite being in seventh place, holds one of those spots as Lyon College is not a full Division III member yet.
However, things could change drastically over the weekend as the Owls are tied with Fontbonne at 6-11 in conference play.
The two split their conference matchups during the season, but MUW holds a tiebreaker over the Griffins due to a better record against common conference opponents.
Both have one game remaining, with MUW traveling to play second place Westminster College and Fontbonne heading on the road to play Spalding.
According to MUW athletics, a scenario where both teams win or lose guarantees the Owls a spot in the conference tournament. In other words, a win and The W is in. If, however, the Owls lose and Fontbonne wins, they miss the SLIAC tournament by one game.
Needless to say, Saturday afternoon’s regular season finale for The W is the biggest game of the season, bar none.
