COLUMBUS — Mississippi University for Women saw several of its teams in action last week, with volleyball and men’s and women’s golf and soccer teams all traveling for their respective events.
Owls golfer Zach Riley was named Owl of the Week for his fifth-placed finish in the LeTourneau Tempest Intercollegiate tournament, where he also helped the men’s team finish second in the team standings.
The women’s soccer team had a good week as well, winning their first match of the season at Agnes Scott College in a 2-1 second-half comeback.
The Owls played well in the first half but fell 1-0 down going into the break. They created the majority of chances in the game, with 14 shots in the first half, and stuck to the plan to turn things around. Kimi Norway equalized six minutes after the restart, and after peppering the opposition’s goal for much of the second half the Owls got the winner with three minutes to play as Kate Blankenship scored.
It was the first win for Owls head coach Ana Ramos, who heaped praise on her team for their hard work leading up to the match.
“The team had a great week of training that translated over to the game seamlessly,” Ramos said. “We had two great team goals and a few more good opportunities. It was a fun game to coach as the team really found their footing tonight and every member played for their teammates next to them.”
The men’s team traveled to Centenary College in Louisiana over the weekend for a pair of matches against Centenary and Austin College, respectively. Head coach BJ Pheasant’s team lost by a score of 9-0 in both matches.
Finally, the Owls volleyball team was in action at Huntingdon College, where they were swept 3-0. They’ll get a chance at revenge on Tuesday night, hosting Huntingdon at Pohl Gymnasium at 7 p.m. They will travel later in the week to begin St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play against Westminster and Eureka on Saturday.
Both soccer teams are in action again this week, with the women’s team traveling to Belhaven on Tuesday before traveling with the men’s team for matches at Freed-Hardeman on Friday and the University of St. Thomas on Sunday.
Cross Country is also traveling for the Rhodes Invitational on Saturday.
