COLUMBUS —The Mississippi University for Women has wrapped up its 2024 slate of sports. The men’s and women’s basketball teams played their final games last week before the holiday break in the season.
Men’s team head coach Dean Burrows saw his group win two games in a row to close out December action. They followed up a 62-60 overtime win over Millsaps with another non-conference home win, beating Southeastern Baptist College to the tune of 98-56 on Tuesday.
The Owls (4-6) never looked uncomfortable against the winless Chargers, leading their opponents wire-to-wire, up 55-20 at the half and by as many as 50 points in the second half.
It was the team’s best scoring performance of the season, collectively hitting 55.2% of their shots. Chris Evans and Dariun Doss led the way with 17 and 16 points respectively, and Eric Bass Jr. and Trent Walker joined them in double digits as well.
It wasn’t as successful a week for the women’s team, who saw their losing streak extend to seven games with a loss at Huntingdon College on Wednesday.
Head coach Eric Vaughn’s team fell to 1-9 after a 67-60 loss to the Hawks. The Owls trailed for much of the contest but cut the lead to a single possession with a minute left in the fourth quarter. They simply couldn’t keep pace over the final possessions as the gap extended.
Calysia Phillips continued her good scoring form with a team-best 26 points to lead the Owls on the scoresheet. She scored 21 in the second half as she tried to lead the comeback attempt. Conley Langford joined her in double-digits with 15 points, but ultimately, they couldn’t score enough to catch the Hawks.
Both teams return to action in 2025 with a trip to face St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents Lyon College in Batesville, Ark., on January 4.
