STARKVILLE — Mississippi State senior Jake Mangum and junior Colby White were selected on the second day of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player draft on Tuesday.
The New York Mets selected Mangum in the fourth round (No. 118), while the Tampa Bay Rays took White in the sixth round (No. 188).
The Mets selected Mangum in the 32nd round of last year’s draft before he returned to MSU.
This is the first time White has been drafted.
Mangum, the Southeastern Conference’s all-time hits leader, will leave MSU as the first player in school history to earn three first-team All-SEC selections.
Mangum owns program records in hits (375), at-bats (1,052), and games (257). He also is tied for first in doubles (71) and ranks in the top 10 in batting average, triples, runs, total bases, and stolen bases.
White is in his first season at MSU after two standout years at Pearl River Community College in Poplarville.
He boasts a 3.28 earned run average in 25 appearances at MSU. White has allowed 16 hits and struck out 45 in 24 2/3 innings.
Mangum and White join redshirt junior Ethan Small as the three Bulldogs to be selected in the first 10 rounds of the draft.
The Milwaukee Brewers selected Small in the first round (No. 28 overall) Monday night.
MSU signee Ethan Hearn also was chosen Tuesday. The Chicago Cubs selected Hearn, a catcher out of Mobile Christian School in Mobile, Alabama, in the sixth round (No. 192 overall).
The final 29 rounds of the draft will conclude Wednesday and stream live on MLB.com beginning at 11 a.m.
