Playing in her first major, Mississippi State golfer Julia Lopez Ramirez made the cut at one of the most famous venues in the world, the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland. The rising senior from Spain finished tied for 29th, three strokes over par, at the Women’s British Open.
Former Bulldog Ally Ewing also competed at St Andrews, finishing one stroke behind Lopez Ramirez in a tie for 37th place at +4. Ewing has finished in the top 10 at all five majors — including top-five finishes this year at the Women’s PGA Championship and the U.S. Women’s Open — but was not at her best this weekend.
Lopez Ramirez, the two-time reigning Southeastern Conference individual champion and the 2024 SEC Golfer of the Year, opened the tournament with an even-par first round Thursday and was two strokes over on Friday, though she did make an eagle on the 12th hole. Sunday was her best round of the Open with a 71, although after a fast start that included five birdies on the first 10 holes, she bogeyed five of the last seven holes.
Ewing, known as Ally McDonald during her college days, held nearly every program record at the time of her graduation in 2015. In high school, she became the first girl to win the Mississippi boys’ state championship, then became a three-time All-American at MSU. She is married to Bulldogs head coach Charlie Ewing.
At St. Andrew’s, Ewing’s best round came Friday, when she shot a 69 that included a stretch of four birdies in five holes on the back nine. But she followed that up with a 76 on Saturday to tumble out of contention.
