STARKVILLE — De’Runnya Wilson’s career at Mississippi State has come to an end.
The junior wide receiver announced on Instagram that he played in his last MSU game as the Bulldogs beat North Carolina State 51-28 Wednesday in the Belk Bowl in Charlotte, North Carolina.
“Ended my college career #Belk bowl champs,” Wilson posted with a picture of he and his teammates after the victory. “I’m goin miss playing in maroon and white #hailstate.”
MSU has not made an announcement or confirmed if Wilson is forgoing his senior season to enter the National Football League Draft.
Wilson, who played only one year of high school football at Wenonah High School in Birmingham, Alabama, leaves as one of the top receivers in school history. In just three seasons, Wilson made 133 catches (fifth all-time) for 1,949 yards (sixth all-time) and 22 touchdowns (second all-time).
It’s not surprising to see Wilson leave, as he is expected to be taken anywhere between the second and fourth rounds of the draft. Junior defensive lineman Chris Jones is the other underclassmen who could declare early for the daft.
With Wilson gone, that leaves Fred Ross as the most experienced receiver. His junior campaign was his best as he set the single-season school record with 88 catches. He became just the second receiver to reach 1,000 yards (1,007). He also had five touchdowns.
Wilson will be missed, but Ross is poised for a big season in 2016.
“Looking at his future, he has the opportunity next year to probably leave as one of the top receivers in school history and set a lot of receiving records,” MSU coach Dan Mullen said.
