TUPELO — The Tupelo Aquatic Center was the place to be over the weekend as it hosted the 2023 Mississippi High School Activities Association swimming state championships.
Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science, competing as a Class I team, and Starkville, competing as a Class III team, both had representatives competing, and each ended up seeing at least one swimmer earn a podium finish.
Cate Nobles medaled twice for the Yellow Jackets, finishing second in the girls 100-yard breaststroke event with a time of 1:08.45, just 0.44 seconds behind first. She also finished third in the girls 200-yard freestyle swim with a time of 2:03.47.
Overall, the girls team placed seventh and the boys team finished 12th among Class III teams.
The Blue Waves had a number of medalists, beginning with senior Maddie Brain, who finished third in the girls 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:06.80.
Fellow MSMS senior Rushyendranath Reddy Nalamalapu finished third in the boys 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.25.
Two relay teams for the Blue Waves medaled, the girls 200-yard freestyle relay, who finished third with a time of 1:59.86, and the boys 200-yard freestyle relay, who finished second with a time of 1:39.13.
Overall, the boys team finished sixth and the girls team finished fourth among Class I teams.
