STARKVILLE — While the season may be in peril, senior running back Kylin Hill added another award to his resume Wednesday.
Hill, a Columbus native, was named to the Doak Walker Award watch list for the second-straight season after he led the Southeastern Conference with 1,350 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2019. The Doak Walker Award is presented annually to the nation’s top running back and is presented by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum.
In 2019, Hill earned first team All-SEC honors from the Associated Press and was named to the Fall SEC Academic Honor Roll. The former Columbus High School standout also won the Conerly Trophy in December, honoring the best football player in the state of Mississippi — marking the fifth time in seven years an MSU player took home the award.
Hill also played an instrumental role in pushing legislators to remove the Confederate battle emblem from the top-left corner of the Mississippi state flag this offseason. Threatening to sit out this season should it not be changed, he was one of a number of student-athletes, coaches and administrators to speak up in favor of removing the controversial iconography.
MSU is slated to begin its 2020 season on Sept. 5 against New Mexico at Davis Wade Stadium, though plans are continuing to be reviewed as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread across the United States. No changes to the Bulldogs’ schedule have been made at this time.
