A Southeastern Conference win continued to elude the Mississippi State women over the weekend, with shutout losses at home to Florida on Friday and No. 11 Auburn on Sunday.
The Bulldogs’ No. 2 doubles team of freshman Emma Cohen and senior Alessia Tagliente did manage a win against the Gators, but MSU was unable to take a set in any of the completed singles matches. Sophomore Athina Pitta won the first set at No. 4 singles, but her match was abandoned when Florida secured enough points for the victory.
Sunday’s match against the Tigers followed a similar script, with the Bulldogs again dropping every set on the top three singles courts. Sophomore Jayna Clemens and freshman Chiara Di Genova were both in good shape to win their singles matches when Auburn wrapped things up.
MSU (10-7, 0-7 SEC) hits the road to face Kentucky on Friday and No. 8 Tennessee on Sunday.
On the men’s side, No. 16 MSU came up short on the road against Georgia on Saturday, 4-3, despite winning the doubles point. Senior Dusan Milanovic and junior Michal Novansky started things off with a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles, and freshman Niccolo Baroni and junior Mario Martinez Serrano won in a tiebreak at No. 2.
Georgia won the first two completed singles matches, with sophomore Roberto Ferrer Guimaraes falling in straight sets at No. 5 and junior Petar Jovanovic also losing in two sets at No. 2. Martinez Serrano knotted things up at the No. 4 spot, but Baroni fell in three sets at No. 3 before junior Benito Sanchez Martinez won a pair of tight sets at the No. 1 position.
That meant it all came down to Bryan Hernandez Cortes at No. 6 singles. The freshman lost the first set in a tiebreak and bounced back to win the second, but could not sustain the momentum in the decisive third.
MSU (14-4, 4-3 SEC) returns home for a match against No. 25 South Carolina on Sunday.
