NASHVILLE, Tenn. — For only the second time on the road, Mississippi State soccer (10-4-3, 4-4-1 Southeastern Conference) came up short against its opponent, falling 2-1 to Vanderbilt (11-2-3, 5-2-2 SEC) on Sunday afternoon.
“Another great effort versus a quality opponent where, unfortunately, we just came up short,” head coach James Armstrong said. “We have to put this one behind us and get ready for Thursday.”
Five minutes after kickoff, the Commodores found its first goal of the afternoon. The lead lasted only five minutes before Mississippi State found the equalizer — the second time in two outings where the Bulldogs responded in the first half.
In the 10th minute, three-year captain and graduate senior Alyssa D’Aloise received the ball near midfield from sophomore Alexis Gutierrez. On her first and only touch, D’Aloise lofted the ball toward the box where freshman Maggie Wadsworth maneuvered around a Commodore defender. Once inside the box, the Flowery Branch, Georgia, native curled the ball in for her eighth goal of the season.
The eight goals scored by Wadsworth are now tied for third-most in a season by a MSU freshman.
Vanderbilt found the eventual game-winner in the 74th minute.
Mississippi State now sits in a three-way tie for fifth place in the conference standings, tied with South Carolina and Georgia with 13 points in league play. MSU and Georgia (11-5-1, 5-3-1 SEC) will square off in Mississippi State’s final regular-season match on Thursday in Starkville. The match will kick off at 6:30 p.m. and will air on SEC Network Plus.
