No. 16 Mississippi State picked up its second straight Southeastern Conference victory Thursday at Vanderbilt, clinching the match with the shutout still intact en route to a 6-1 win over the Commodores.
Senior Dusan Milanovic and junior Michal Novansky lost 6-3 at No. 3 doubles, putting the Bulldogs in an early hole. But MSU’s No. 2 team of freshman Niccolo Baroni and junior Mario Martinez Serrano, ranked 29th nationally, won by that same score. The fourth-ranked pairing of juniors Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez clinched the doubles point in a tiebreak at No. 1 over Vanderbilt’s top duo, which was ranked 28th.
Baroni won his singles match 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, and Sanchez Martinez earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 1. Martinez Serrano then wrapped things up at No. 4, winning each of his two sets 6-4.
The remaining matches were played out, and Jovanovic fell at No. 2 after taking the first set to put the Commodores on the board. But Novansky and sophomore Roberto Ferrer Guimaraes each won a first-set tiebreak before winning the second set more comfortably.
The doubles win from Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez was their 47th as a pairing, tying them for third in program history. Ferrer Guimaraes improved to 4-0 in SEC singles play, and Novansky — who only competed in doubles last spring while recovering from an injury — has won 12 straight dual matches dating back to April 2023.
MSU (14-3, 4-2 SEC) moved into fourth place in the conference standings, trailing Texas, South Carolina and Texas A&M. The Bulldogs have a half-game lead over Georgia, whom they will face Saturday in Athens at noon CT.
