STARKVILLE — With a new era of revenue-sharing in college sports looming, Mississippi State University’s athletic programs got a big boost from some longtime supporters.
MSU’s athletic department announced Thursday that it had received a $2.5 million donation from Vicksburg business owners, the Goldings.
“A huge thank you to Steve, Melody, Austin, Kirsten and John Reid for their direct impact on Mississippi State Athletics,” Athletic Director Zach Selmon said in a statement. “The Goldings care deeply for our university, our community, and our state. Their thoughtful decision to join us in this pursuit is a testament to their generosity and relentless competitive spirit. We are grateful.”
Donors Steve, Melody, Austin, Kirsten and John Reid are all Mississippi State Alumni. Austin was on the MSU Track and Field team during his time in Starkville, and his wife, Kirsten, was an MSU cheerleader.
The family owns and operates Golding Barge Line, a tank barge transportation company based in Vicksburg.
“Whether it’s running a successful business or competing in high-level athletics, ensuring your team has the resources it needs – while cultivating a relentless work ethic and a high-achieving culture – is something we firmly believe in,” Steve Golding said in a university release. “Mississippi State is a source of great pride for our family, and we want to be part of the solution as the department strives to reach new heights.”
The Goldings also established an endowed scholarship at the Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2024, an annual award with a preference for first-year students who are Mississippi residents.
