STARKVILLE — Mississippi State earned its second major commitment of the day Monday night as Alabama graduate transfer Tyrell Shavers announced his intention to conclude his college career in Starkville via Twitter.
A former top-100 recruit in the class of 2017, Shavers recorded just one catch for 20 yards and one rush for 14 yards, while contributing mostly as a special teamer over his three years in Tuscaloosa. He has two years of eligibility remaining.
With Shavers expected to be immediately eligible, MSU now has six wide receiver prospects headed to campus this summer headlined by No. 1 junior college receiver and former Under Armour All-American Malik Heath, Starkville native Rufus Harvey and four-star top-300 recruit Lideatrick “Tulu” Griffin.
Shavers also becomes the second former Alabama player to trade his crimson for maroon this offseason after former Crimson Tide offensive lineman and West Point product Scott Lashley previously enrolled at MSU in January.
In other recruiting news, MSU received a commitment from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College linebacker Navonteque “Bug” Strong on Monday. Rated the No. 1 junior college inside linebacker in the country, Strong became MSU’s ninth pledge in the 2021 class just hours after Georgia native Thomas Davis backed off his commitment.
“First I would like to thank all Mississippi State University coaches that recruited me,” Davis wrote via Twitter. “With that being said, I will be re-opening my recruitment. I want to make sure I have the right one that’s best for me (and) also my family. (Mississippi State) is still a top school for me. Respect my decision.”
