COLUMBUS — After a successful weekend, Mississippi University for Women sophomore women’s tennis player Macie Manasco was named the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) South Division Player of the Week.
“I am honored to win,” Manasco said in Tuesday’s press release. “My coach, team, and I have worked hard to become the team we are today.”
Overall, Manasco went 2-0 in singles play as the No. 3 women’s singles player for the Owls, including a third-set tiebreaker victory over Huntingdon College’s Ella Hatchcoch, 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 10-7.
In doubles play, Manasco went 1-1, taking her final match of the week against LaGrange College with partner Karen Calzadilla. The pair won, 8-3, playing on the No. 1 doubles court.
This is the Owls’ first weekly/season accolade since joining the UMAC as part of their first full season as a Division III member. MUW is competing in the UMAC because tennis is not a sponsored sport in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).
“I’m really proud of Macie and the hard work she puts in every single day,” head coach Daniel Talley said in an athletics release. “Her resilience and perseverance is core to who she is as a tennis player and as a person. It is a joy to have her on this team.”
