STARKVILLE — Several track and field teams from across the state congregated in Starkville on Tuesday for an invitational track and field meet, featuring 15 high schools. Golden Triangle schools Caledonia, New Hope and Heritage Academy made the short trip over to compete for both boys and girls events.
Hosts Starkville saw success from the boys’ team in field events. Sanchez Brooks won the triple jump and long jump while Tyshaun Denmark took first in the high jump.
The Starkville girls saw several dominant performances on the day, notably Jocelyn Randle, who took first place in the 100, 200 and 400-meter races. Fellow Jackets Anijha Davis, 100-meter hurdle, and Ariel Conner, triple jump, took home first place medals as well.
The Jacket girls also took first place in the 4×100 and 4×200 relay events.
The Trojans saw several athletes compete for the top places, and New Hope senior Braxton Williams made his mark on the meet with first-place finishes in both the 100 and 200-meter races.
Caledonia’s reigning Class 4A champion track team showed out as well, with three boys team wins in the 4×200, 4×400 and 4×800 meter relays. The Caledonia girls also won the 4×400 and 4×800 meter relays.
In individual events, the Cavaliers were able to show off their distance running, with girls Peyton Kielman taking the 1600 meter and Ella and Addie Shepherd taking first and second, respectively, in the 800 meter. The boys team featured Carter Reed winning the 400 meter, Dylan Reed winning the 800 meter and 1600-meter races and James Luttrell winning the 3,200 meter.
In other events, Charlie Sullivan won both the 110 and 300-meter hurdle events for the Cavaliers, while Ivy Taylor won the girls discus event and Alexis Wilburn won the high jump.
