STARKVILLE — It was a big year for Mississippi State’s Ilana Izquierdo, as the junior midfielder set a new program record for most minutes played.
She started in all 23 matches for the Bulldogs, finishing the season with four goals and three assists, proving to be one of the most reliable and consistent midfielders in the Southeastern Conference.
The Colombian-born Izquierdo, already having represented her home country in a number of international competitions previously, now adds another to her stacked resume this week.
She will once again represent Colombia, this time in the inaugural CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup, playing her first match on Wednesday evening in San Diego.
Colombia was one of four nations selected from the CONMEBOL, the South American soccer confederation, to play in the event, hosted by the North American soccer confederation.
Twelve nations will be competing, including the United States, Canada, Argentina and Brazil..
“Playing for the national team is a dream come true,” Izquierdo said. “I am so grateful for this opportunity and all the support I have received.”
