For the second consecutive year, the all-time leading scorer in Mississippi high school boys’ basketball has been honored as the best college player in the state.

Mississippi State guard Josh Hubbard was announced Monday as the Howell Trophy recipient, winning the award presented annually to the best men’s college basketball player in Mississippi for the second time in as many seasons. A Bulldogs player has now won the trophy in seven of the last eight years, with Quinndary Weatherspoon winning it twice and Reggie Perry, Iverson Molinar and Tolu Smith each winning once.
Hubbard finished the regular season fourth in the Southeastern Conference in scoring, averaging 18.3 points per game. He turned it up a notch in conference play, with 18.8 points per contest, and his 3.1 made 3-pointers per game are second in the SEC. Hubbard is also second in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio and free throw percentage. He is the sixth player in program history with at least 500 points and 100 assists in the same season.
The award is named after MSU legend Bailey Howell, who went on to a 12-year NBA career and is in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Hubbard beat out Sean Pedulla of Ole Miss and Daeshun Ruffin of Jackson State for this year’s trophy.
Hubbard was also named Second Team All-SEC by the conference’s head coaches, joining Erick Dampier as the only players in program history to earn all-SEC honors in their freshman and sophomore seasons. Forward Cameron Matthews, who leads the conference in steals, was named to the All-Defensive Team for the second year in a row.
The Bulldogs are the No. 10 seed in the SEC Tournament in Nashville, Tennessee, and will play No. 15 seed LSU in the first round this evening.
