Mississippi State men’s basketball followed the example set by the women’s team on Thursday and began its SEC campaign with a win. The Bulldogs improved to 9-5 with a 101-98 overtime win against Texas at the Moody Center on Saturday, propelled to victory behind Josh Hubbard’s 38 points.
The Bulldogs kept a narrow lead through much of the first half, and led 48-43 at the break. The Longhorns kept pace in the second half and even took a late lead thanks to some prolific play from Dailyn Swain, who was destroying the Bulldogs with 34 points. However, he couldn’t stay out of foul trouble and fouled out in the final minutes of the second half.
The Bulldogs trailed by six at that point, but quickly mounted a comeback to tie the game, getting a stop on the final possession to force overtime.
Hubbard, who ended regulation with 28 points, hit a key three-pointer to cut the lead to two late, and a Brandon Walker bucket in the final seconds levelled the contest again.
The overtime period saw more back-and-forth play, but Hubbard’s 10 overtime points propelled the Bulldogs to the win.
Jayden Epps wasn’t too far behind Hubbard, adding 27 points on 9-21 shooting. Achor Achor had 10 points, and Sergej Macura and Ja’Borri McGhee had seven each.
The Bulldogs will face Oklahoma at Humphrey Coliseum on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
