The Mississippi High School Activities Association state basketball playoffs began on Monday evening with the Class 1A-4A girls brackets.
Two teams from the Dispatch coverage area participated in the first round of action, Caledonia in the Class 4A bracket and Noxubee County in the Class 3A bracket.
The Cavaliers (15-10) faced off against District 1 champion Tishomingo County on the road and faced a tough task against a 25-3 team. Caledonia lost, 68-31, ending their season on a five-game losing streak after being 15-5 with a 4-2 district record in late January.
While the season came to a disappointing end, this Cavaliers team made history, reaching the state playoffs for the first time in school history.
Noxubee County (6-14) suffered a similar fate against the Class 3A District 7 champs, Port Gibson.
Regular season records went out the window in the first round of the playoffs and the Tigers took it to the Blue Waves, keeping things close throughout, but losing in the end, 61-53.
A 4-6 record in district play helped Noxubee County sneak into the playoffs, as the Tigers earned wins when it counted most, but a winless district tournament led to a tough draw and final result for the Tigers.
