It was an exciting weekend for Heritage Academy’s girls junior varsity basketball team as it captured the District 2-4A championship on Saturday – its first in program history – by way of a 48-37 victory over East Rankin Academy.
The Patriots, who finished the season 14-5 overall with an unblemished 10-0 mark in district games, were led by Julia Yeatman’s 14 points, with Nevaeh Jefferson, McKinley Johnston and Morgan Dooley all adding nine points each.
“I’m extremely proud,” head coach Maggie Proffitt said. “I think starting the year we really didn’t know what we had. I knew I had a bunch of kids who played really hard. I think the word that we used this year to describe this group would be ‘gritty.’ They’re tough, they get after it and I was just so proud to see them respond because them being put in that situation where they’ve never won a championship and really haven’t won a ton as a team, they just came out and really responded against really a storied program at East Rankin, and I’m just super proud of that.
“We ended up just growing a ton. We’re young, I’ve got a group of ninth graders but not a ton of experience, and they really responded and grew a ton as individuals and as a team, and it was just so much fun to watch their growth throughout the year. And just to see them experience some success was really cool to be a part of.”
