STARKVILLE — Mississippi State women’s tennis strengthened its roster for the 2024-25 season with the addition of Gianna Oboniye, one of the top amateur talents from Canada.
Oboniye is the newest addition to MSU’s signing class for next season, coming from Edmonton, Alberta.
“I am really excited about Gianna joining the team,” head coach Chris Hooshyar said. “I have always said it, one of the biggest honors of being a college coach is when a kid calls you to say I want to come and play for you. It is a huge responsibility, and I don’t take it lightly.”
Her success on the court in recent years has been tenfold, coming off winning the 2023 U18 Canadian Outdoor Nationals doubles title and J60 Edmonton doubles title at the same tournament.
That followed a 2022 season where she won yet another pair of doubles titles and was part of Team Alberta at the Canadian Summer games.
“The Bulldog family is going to love what Gianna brings to the court,” Hooshyar said. “She is already performing at a high level. I can’t wait to get to the practice court with her and see how high her ceiling really is. I think it is pretty high.”
